How Do You Cut Corrugated Cardboard?

Corrugated Board

Most items in your favorite supermarket, discount shop, or shopping center are securely packed in boxes made of corrugated cardboard, many items are displayed in the same box and these boxes are manufactured so that they can be opened and used for this purpose. Other items may come in their own corrugated cardboard or non-corrugated cardboard boxes. Because the corrugated board is a versatile packaging material, millions of tonnes are used each year to protect and display products. in 1992, over 25 million tonnes of the corrugated board were produced in the United States. An additional six million tonnes of uncorrugated cardboard or board for use in folding cartons were also produced.

Corrugated cardboard is a hard, strong, lightweight material consisting of three layers of brown kraft paper. in 1884, Swedish chemist Carl F. Dahl developed a process for pulping wood chips into a strong paper that resists tearing, splitting, and breaking. He named it the kraft process because it produced a strong paper that resisted tearing, splitting, and bursting.

 Automatic Sheet Loading System

From the paper mill, rolls of kraft paper are transported to a corrugating or converting plant. At the plant, the kraft layers are rolled and glued to form a corrugated board, which is then cut, printed, folded, and glued into boxes. At the start of the process, the kraft rolls from the paper mill are loaded into a huge machine called a corrugator. A typical corrugator is as long as a football field - 300 feet (91.44 meters). Some rolls of kraft paper are used as the corrugating medium and others as the liner, with layers of kraft paper adhered to each side of the medium.

The corrugator heats glues and presses the kraft paper to form a corrugated board. The continuous board is cut into wide box blanks, which then go into other machines for printing, cutting, and gluing. Finally, batches of finished boxes are bundled together and shipped to food processors, toy manufacturers, automotive parts distributors, or any of the thousands of businesses that rely on corrugated cardboard packaging.

Definition of corrugated board

Corrugated fibreboard is a material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet and one or two flat linerboards. It is made on a "flute lamination machine" or "corrugator" and is used to make cardboard boxes. The corrugated medium sheets and the linerboards are made from kraft containerboard, which is usually more than 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) thick. Corrugated fibreboard is sometimes referred to as corrugated cardboard, although the cardboard may be any heavy pulp-based paperboard.

Classification of corrugated board

1. There are different grades depending on the number of corrugated grooves, including

  • Type A: one layer of corrugation, sparse grooves

  • Type B: One layer of corrugations, dense grooves

  • Type E: consisting of denser ripples

  • Type AB: two layers of corrugated, sparse grooves

  • Type AE: If it consists of two layers of corrugation but the grooves are one sparse and one dense.

2. Classification by layers

According to the number of layers of corrugated cardboard, there are single-layer and multi-layer corrugated cardboard. Multi-layer corrugated cardboard packaging is more stable for transport.

3. Classification by corrugated groove shape

Because the shape of the corrugated board plays a decisive role in its compressive strength, corrugated shapes are divided into V, U and UV according to the size of the groove arc. The specific characteristics are as follows.
